Why Software Engineering is the Ideal Career (for Me, at Least)

I’ve spent years in operational jobs—IT services, support—where every damn second of your time was tracked and calculated. The contrast with software engineering? Night and day. Here’s why it works for me:

  • Freedom to work like an adult. 🙌 You’re given tasks for a sprint (2 weeks usually), and how you finish them is up to you. No micromanagement, just trust. Daily standups? Sure, but I can live with that.
  • Great pay, no need to manage. 💰 You can stay an individual contributor your whole career and still earn big bucks. No chasing promotions, no people management.
  • Low meetings, no travel. 🛋️ Unless you love endless Zoom calls (I don’t), this career lets you focus on work without unnecessary distractions.
  • Job mobility. 🔄 Switching roles every 1-2 years? Totally normal in tech if the market’s good.

As a family man with small kids 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦, I don’t want to spend my life on planes or in meetings. Software engineering fits like a glove.
